Dirty Pictures

Presented by the Art History program
Introductory remarks by Professor Orville Clarke

Friday, November 21 at 6:00 PM, Wargin Hall 142

Dirty Pictures (2000) – Rated R
*The movie contains some graphic photographic images*

Starring: James Woods, Craig T. Nelson and Diana Scarwin

With appearances by: Rep. Barney Frank, William F. Buckley, Salman Rushdie and Robert Mapplethorpe

This movie is a dramatization of the controversy and trial surrounding the Robert Mapplethorpe photographic exhibition, The Perfect Moment, in Cincinnati in 1990. The outcome of that trial is still being debated today. It is a powerful exploration of censorship in the world of art.

All are welcome.

A Bat Lands in Chaffey's Theatre

From the October 20, 2008 edition of The Breeze.

By Donel Williams
In the true spirit of Halloween, the Chaffey College Theater Department will be performing Bat Boy: The Musical.
But what is Bat Boy?

"It isn't Batman; it has nothing to do with Batman," director Christa Havenhill expressed with a smile.

Bat Boy's story was written by Keythe Farley and Brian Fleming with lyrics by Laurence O'Keefe. Based on the Weekly World News article, the plot surrounds half boy/half bat creature, played by Luis A. Rodriguez, who is discovered in a cave in a small West Virginia town.

The musical was an Off-Broadway success, and its lack of mainstream attention made it a wonderful addition to the Chaffey theater season.

"Our theater department just wanted to do something different to expose our students to not so mainstream productions," Havenhill said. "This is something a little bit different."

Shows such as Bat Boy and The Children's Hour are polar opposites in comparison to the more mainstream performances of the past, which included The Wiz and Grease.

Havenhill notes the performance of Rodriguez as the lead character as "endearing." Indeed, the the story does have a redeeming quality.

"It's a hugely entertaining production. Expect a lot of laughs, but at the heart of it, there's a deeper question."

Production quality will be top notch, featuring a professional four-person band, as well as an aimpressively designed stage.

Bat Boy: The Musical will open Thursday, Oct. 23, and play through Saturday, Nov. 1 at the Chaffey Theater. Tickets are on sale now for $10 with a student ID, $12 without. Seats may be reserved by calling the box office at (909) 652-6067.

On Halloween, a special showing will be held, complete with a costume contest. This showing will be held at 9 p.m.

Bat Boy is rated PG-13 for subject matter.

Students Plan a Trip to the Getty

Art History Professor John Machado will be accompanying the Associated Students of Chaffey College on a bus trip to the J. Paul Getty Museum of Art at the Getty Center in Los Angeles on Saturday, October 25. The chartered bus is being sponsored by the ASCC and funded by the college service fee. Seats are limited, so students need to reserve a seat on the bus now at the Student Activities office in Campus Center East. This trip is free to all Chaffey College students who have paid the college service fee. Students need to bring their tuition payment printout and ID when reserving a seat.

This will be a great educational opportunity for students. Museum visits provide unique experiences and change the dynamics of the learning environment, which is conducive to different learning styles. The direct museum experience stimulates the senses for heightened perception, sharpens critical thinking skills, and increases retention. It can also promote self-directed education and be a vehicle for building tolerance. It provides an avenue for students to see the material as part of their lives and identify how it informs contemporary life.

Tuesday, September 2, 6:00pm – 9:00pm

Chaffey College and the Wignall Museum are pleased to present Mammygraphs: Mark Steven Greenfield and Trick Baby: Ernest Arthur Bryant III from August 25– September 27, 2008. Both concurrent exhibitions are free and open to the public.

Mammygraphs features photographs and sculptural works by LA-based artist Mark Steven Greenfield. Greenfield’s work appropriates historic images from the heyday of blackface minstrelsy. With this provocative selection of images and objects, Greenfield prompts the viewer to consider the effect this history has on our culture today. Mammygraphs surveys the work created over the last ten years of Greenfield’s illustrious career as a visual artist and includes work from Greenfield’s Blackatcha, Post Minstrel, Incognegro series, as well as new, never-before exhibited work from Mammygraphs.

In Trick Baby, Minneapolis-based artist Ernest Arthur Bryant III weaves race, politics, pop culture and art history into his mixed-media assemblages. Utilizing found clothing remnants, hand painted portraits, graffiti and sewn elements, Bryant’s loaded works challenge the cultural constructions and coding that we take for granted every day and that shape our social interactions. Borrowing the title from Iceberg Slim’s book Trick Baby, the exhibition includes five of Bryant’s works. This is Bryant’s first California exhibition.

Bryant and Greenfield will speak about their work prior to the artists’ reception on Tuesday, September 2 from 6:00-7:00 p.m. at the Wignall Museum. Immediately following will be an artists’ reception with light refreshments and entertainment featuring dj Trickmilla.
