Boundary Lines

Boundary Lines, performance by Leslie Dick
Wignall Museum of Contemporary Art
November 10, 12:30-2pm, CAA-211
FREE and open to the public

In 1994, Leslie Dick wrote a short text which explored the experience of being a mother as an experience of loss, describing a series of moments of separation from her daughter, then two years old. In 2008, Leslie Dick's daughter Audrey made a video in which she (aged sixteen) stood in front of a projection of an old home movie of herself aged eight. Taking this visual superimposition as her point of departure, and regarding the performance as a delayed and displaced collaboration, Leslie Dick will present further thoughts on identification and the image, memory and time.

Separation Anxiety

Separation Anxiety
Curated by Denise Johnson and Rebecca Trawick,
October 11 – November 13, 2010.
Artist Roundtable Discussion: October 13: 5-6:30pm (CAA 218)
Reception: October 13, 6:30-9pm
More info: 909-652-6490

As significant numbers of women have entered the work force since the 1970s in response to shifting economic needs and the influence of the Feminist movement, Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s long honored notion of the “Good Mother” and the demand that she blithely sacrifice all for the good of her children and family has been challenged and reevaluated. But as women have taken a place within the domestic AND public realms, conservative groups have predictably lamented the decline of “family values.” Within that cry, the child has often been portrayed as endangered and lost while mothers seeking to redefine their roles and obligations are seen as frantic and on the verge of unraveling. While far from being resolved, such debates are symptomatic of a cultural anxiety over the state of popular ideals of familyhood and a realization that these idealistic, largely unattainable notions of the family should continue to be frankly reconsidered in the 21st century.

Drawing from the curators’ own efforts to balance the demands of motherhood with creative and professional endeavors, Denise Johnson and Rebecca Trawick consider how contemporary artists have explored modern parenthood under the pressures of changing economies and evolving definitions of familyhood. Artists in the exhibition explore the often unacknowledged worry and unease that all parents, traditional or not, must navigate. Through these investigations, cultural anxieties and debates over the definition of family, parenthood and childhood are explored in surprising and interesting ways.

Separation Anxiety will feature the work of: Claudia Alvarez, Monica Bock, Erika DeVries, Leslie Dick, Elizabeth Douglas, Rebecca Edwards, Carol Flax, Haley Hasler, Connie Hatch, Clea Jones, Ellina Kevorkian, Kate Kretz, M.A.M.A. (Athena Kanaris, Lisa Mann, Lisa Schoyer, Karen Schwenkmeyer), Marcos Rosales, Mark Stockton, Abbey Williams, and Jennifer Wroblewski.

Even Better Than the Real Thing

Even Better Than the Real Thing
at the Wignall Museum of Contemporary Art

Rancho Cucamonga, CA - Chaffey College and the Wignall Museum of Contemporary Art are pleased to present Even Better Than the Real Thing: The Art of the Uncanny, curated by Jennifer Frias, August 23 – September 25, 2010. The reception will be Tuesday, August 24, 6-9 p.m., with light refreshments and entertainment featuring dj Trickmilla. The reception will be held in conjunction with the Chaffey College Center for the Arts building dedication and reception from 5-7 p.m. There will be a curator’s walk-through with Jennifer Frias on September 22 at 6pm.

Even Better Than the Real Thing: The Art of the Uncanny observes the edges of perception. It takes into account the notion of “defamiliarization,” or the artistic technique of forcing the audience to see common things in an unfamiliar or strange way in order to enhance perception of the familiar by making the everyday uncanny. While the procedure to achieve such realistic and hi-tech qualities may appear mass-produced, the objects in the exhibition were constructed meticulously by applying basic, traditional art and handcraft techniques, such as painting, drawing, sculpting and sewing. The works selected for Even Better Than the Real Thing posses characteristics that are visually arresting, seductive, and at times, disturbing. The results undertake an unsettling realism and issue a challenge to art’s alleged dedication to the world of appearances.

Even Better Than the Real Thing will feature the work of: Jon Bonser, Joe Davidson, Ben Jackel, Kiel Johnson, Nina Katchadourian, Rebecca Morales, Kristen Morgin, Kaz Oshiro, Derek Parker, Andy Ralph, Laura Splan, and Stephanie Syjuco.

Guest Curator Jennifer Frias is the assistant curator of UCR's Sweeney Art Gallery. Her curatorial projects focus on contemporary art, with special emphasis on the exploration of identity, pop culture and technology. She has organized exhibitions such as "Will Connell: Hollywood Noir" (2003), "When Nature Takes Its Course: Natural Disasters from the Keystone-Mast Collection" (2004), "Material Witness" (2007) and worked alongside Tyler Stallings on "Your Donations Do Our Work: Andrea Bowers and Suzanne Lacy" (2009). In 2008, she was guest curator at the California Museum of Photography for the exhibition, "And These Natural Things: Works by Melissa Martinez" (catalog). Her current projects include an exhibition (August 28, 2010 ) for the Begovich Gallery at Cal State Fullerton entitled, "Metadataphile"(catalog), a group exhibition of contemporary works that focuses on appropriating, hacking, re-purposing and regenerating visual information. She is also currently working with the artists and curators collective, SixPackProjects on numerous southern California phantom gallery exhibitions scheduled for fall 2010 and winter 2011.

The exhibition, reception and walk-through are free and open to the public.

Valyoued.org at the Wignall Museum of Contemporary Art

Chaffey College and the Wignall Museum of Contemporary Art are pleased to welcome Valyoued.org, a community-building and knowledge-sharing exhibit and interactive website that were conceptualized and organized by artist Cynde Miller. The exhibit and activities will be hosted at the Wignall Museum of Contemporary Art from March 29 - April 3, 2010, with a reception on March 31 from 12:30 - 1:30pm.

The Valyoued.org website is an interactive experience that allows anyone in the local community to offer to teach or request to learn any imaginable topic. Users of the Valyoued.org website are able to:

* Add new topic ideas.
* Declare their interest in either teaching or learning any idea in the system.
* Have conversations with other users about any of the ideas.
* View the workshop schedule in order to participate in workshops.

The most popular topics have been selected and will now come alive as workshops at the Wignall Museum of Contemporary Art during the span of the exhibit. Please visit http://valyoued.org/idea/exhibit for the schedule.

Valyoued.org was inspired by the experiences of Gregg Mortensen documented in the book, Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Mission to Promote Peace...One School At A Time written by Gregg Mortensen and David Oliver Relin as well as the interactive and experientially-based art of the Fluxus art movement. Valyoued.org intends to celebrate learning in a non-hierarchical and innovative process where every person's skills and interests are valued and the community designs the curricula.

Cynde received her BFA in studio art from California Institute of the Arts. She then attended University of California, Irvine where she received her MFA in studio art. Supplementary education was received at San Francisco Art Institute and Kansas City Art Institute. Cynde has had two solo shows in the Los Angeles area and has been in many group exhibitions. She has worked in almost every media of art including raku ceramics, video, installation, assemblage sculpture and oil painting. Cynde has always been interested in contemporary art history which she draws from in her work. Cynde is inspired by the Fluxus art movement in particular. Reading and teaching are also enormous sources of inspiration for Cynde.

Valyoued.org was made possible with support from
the William T. Colville Foundation

Haute
Curated by Roman Stollenwerk
Starting from the premise that all art is inherently “haute” because of its cost, value and the way in which it is collected, displayed and distributed, Haute is a visual conversation about the qualities that define the exclusivity of Art. Fashion, interior design and other “lifestyle” products have different tiers of value. The difference between mass-production clothing and high fashion is immediately apparent; however, these divides are not as obvious in fine art because anything outside the realm of high art is often excluded from even being considered Art. Haute features the work of artists that use different strategies to recognize, challenge or disrupt this barrier. Haute includes work by: Kevin Appel, Kate Bingaman-Burt, Delia Brown, Chris Christion, Nicole Cohen, Bart Exposito, Anton Henning, Jim Isermann, Eamon O’Kane, Melanie Pullen, and Ami Tallman.

Suzanne Erickson
Pulling from her background in modeling and acting, Suzanne Erickson explores human drama and the humiliations, failures, hopes and successes that she has experienced. By exploring her own past, Erickson also touches on a broad humanistic project that looks at human experience and the ways in which we all “perform” as individuals, creating personas and identities for ourselves that are largely shaped by the social forces that surround and pressure us. Writing, taking photos, making videos and collecting found objects are all components to her process that informs and feeds her projects. The resulting objects and images vacillate between the rough hand-made object and the commercially produced product. Her work maintains evidence of the process and the action of its making, while exuding a drama and presence that echoes the glamour and confidence of window displays, advertisements and theatrical sets.

Bari Ziperstein
Bari Ziperstein’s work investigates consumer culture and challenges viewers to question the associations that people forge with spaces and objects. Her photographic collages, reassembled thrift store furniture and hand-made ceramic objects take as their subject our perceptions and expectations of domestic space and the material abundance of retail space. By fusing the form and rhetoric of modernism with the aesthetics of design magazines and showrooms, she creates work that is familiar in its materials, while disorienting in its form and presence. Her work ultimately veers toward sly humor and absurdity, provoking viewers to consider the significance of the objects surrounding them.

The exhibitions and reception are free and open to the public.
Parents are always encouraged to view the show prior to sharing with children.
