Campaign for CUCAMONGA
The Chaffey College Art Committee is launching the Campaign for CUCAMONGA to bring an exciting permanent public sculpture to the campus. In the 2008 Wignall Museum of Contemporary Art exhibition, Inlandia and the 2008 Temporary Art Park organized by the Art Committee, you may recall seeing Inland Empire-based artist Amy Maloofʼs sculpture Props. The positive response to this art installation was incredible, and a movement began for a permanent installation – to make the artwork a part of Chaffey College for years to come.
Maloof's life-size homage to the Hollywood sign gives a nod and a wink to the world of make-believe to our West and screams, "the Inland Empire and Chaffey College are here and we're proud!" It serves as a symbol of our community, our unity and our common goals at Chaffey College and in the I.E.
Support the Campaign for CUCAMONGA and help us add this exciting piece of public art to the Chaffey College Art Collection.
The arts are an investment in our shared heritage, serving the public good by nurturing human creativity, supporting community spirit, and fostering appreciation of the excellence and diversity of our community’s artistic accomplishments. Your gift truly makes a difference in helping us achieve our goals to support the work of local artists, enrich the campus environment, and promote community education in the arts. If you have ever considered making a donation in support of public art on campus, now is the time! (Letter from the Chair of the Art Committee)
The Associated Students of Chaffey College (ASCC) of 2008-2009 gave $8000 toward the commissioning of this artwork as part of their class gift. The goal of the Campaign for CUCAMONGA is to raise the remaining $10,000. Please help us reach the goal of $10 from 1000 donors.
Donations to the Campaign for CUCAMONGA can be sent to the Art Committee through the Chaffey College Foundation and are tax deductible.

Wignall Museum of Contemporary Art Presents
CUT: Makings of Removal
October 19 – November 21, 2009
Opening Reception: Tuesday, October 20, 6-8pm
Papel Picado Workshop: Saturday, October 24,
1-3pm, Chaffey College, CAC-105
Rancho Cucamonga, CA - Chaffey College and the Wignall Museum of Contemporary Art are pleased to present CUT: Makings of Removal, a group exhibition that presents contemporary artists who hand cut paper to make two- and three-dimensional works that blur the boundaries between drawing, sculpture, installation, photography and collage. The artists included in CUT: Makings of Removal present diverse strategies along the organizing principle of removal; each follows a process of reduction in which work is created by removing and re-contextualizing material from its original form. Artists include: David Adey, Noriko Ambe, Ginny Bishton, Lecia Dole-Recio, Adam Fowler, Dinh Q. Lê, Simone Lourenço, Dana Maiden, Pepe Mar, Chris Natrop, Justin Pearce, Leigh Salgado, Fran Siegel, Jane South, and Deb Whistler. CUT was originally organized in Fall 2008 by Karen Rapp, director of the Vincent Price Art Museum, East Los Angeles College.
In conjunction with CUT: Makings of Removal the Wignall Museum of Contemporary Art is offering a free Papel Picado Workshop with LA-based artist Margaret Sosa. Sosa has been working as a paper cutter in the Mexican style known as papel picado for over 25 years. She learned the art form from master paper cutter, Olga Ponce Furginson, serving as her apprentice for many years. Her work has been exhibited galleries and museums throughout the Los Angeles area and internationally. Margaret is a graduate of California State University Los Angeles, where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in studio art.
Papel picado is the Mexican folk art of cutting tissue paper into decorative banners that are used to adorn altars or as decorations for festive events. Paper cutting has a long history in Mexico and today, Mexican paper cutters continue the art of papel picado using hammers and special chisels with distinctive points for cutting through many layers of tissue paper and most recently are now using sheets of colorful plastic to create unique detailed works of art.
Exhibitions and events are free and open to the public.

Presidential Proclamation for the Arts
NATIONAL ARTS AND HUMANITIES MONTH, 2009
A PROCLAMATION
BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
Throughout our Nation's history, the power of the arts and humanities to move people has built bridges and enriched lives, bringing individuals and communities together through the resonance of creative expression. It is the painter, the author, the musician, and the historian whose work inspires us to action, drives us to contemplation, stirs joy in our hearts, and calls upon us to consider our world anew. The arts and humanities contribute to the vibrancy of our society and the strength of our democracy, and during National Arts and Humanities Month, we recommit ourselves to ensuring all Americans can access and enjoy them.

Alphabet and Sky Burchard
Chaffey College and the Wignall Museum are pleased to present Alphabet: An Exhibition of Hand-Drawn Lettering & Experimental Typography and Sky Burchard: It’s Dangerous to Go Alone from August 24 – September 26, 2009, with a reception on September 9, 6-8pm. Sky Burchard will give a talk about his work on Monday, September 14, 2009, from 12:30 – 1:30pm.
Alphabet: An Exhibition of Hand-Drawn Lettering & Experimental Typography
Post Typography asked each of the 47 artists and designers in Alphabet: An Exhibition of Hand-Drawn Lettering & Experimental Typography to present their alphabets removed from the context of words and typography, therefore focusing on the shapes as an end. The 60 alphabets in this exhibition (all received through an international open call) are shown dissected into their base elements – A through Z – freeing the artists and designers from the confines of legibility. At the same time, they were challenged to expand the experiment into a complete system that goes beyond a short headline, the realm to which such experimentation is usually relegated.
Sky Burchard: It’s Dangerous to Go Alone
In It’s Dangerous to Go Alone, LA-based artist Sky Burchard will focus on the game The Legend of Zelda and the lone explorer “Link” and the weapons and tools he collects along his journey. In this exhibition, the viewer is allowed to enter into the video screen and is confronted with the formal issues inherent in the process of translating the pixilated two-dimensional representations in Zelda into physical objects. In this process, Burchard remains faithful to the representational system of the game and consequently the objects become abstracted as they depart from the conventional rules of three-dimensional representation. By delving into the world of games, It’s Dangerous to Go Alone also raises questions about the ways technology and fantasy can both supplement and replace social interaction and intimacy; the world of fantasy parallels Link's journey, where the process of becoming the hero supersedes the final goal, leaving the explorer perpetually alone on the journey.

SIMPLEXITY
Simplexity - 32nd Annual Student Invitational Exhibition
Wignall Museum at Chaffey College
April 20 – May 23, 2009
Reception: Wednesday, April 29, 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.
Chaffey College and the Wignall Museum are pleased to present Simplexity: Student Invitational 2009. Simplexity opens Monday, April 20 and runs through Saturday, May 23, 2009. For this exhibition, eleven Chaffey College students were selected by a panel of the college’s art, photography, digital media and art history faculty to participate in a semester-long course, taught by art professor Misty Burruel, culminating in an exhibition at the Wignall Museum and the publication of an exhibition catalogue.
The 2009 Student Invitational exhibition will include two new student positions, an art writer and graphic designer. The art writer developed an exhibition essay for the catalogue and museum didactics; the graphic designer worked with the visual artists to create a visual identity for the exhibition, including the design of the accompanying exhibition announcement and catalogue. The graphic designer, art writer, and artists have all worked to form a cohesive exhibition theme that is articulated in the title word, Simplexity. Artists, art writer, and graphic designer include: Pamela Aliaga, Andréa Arriola, Andrea Benitez, Taryn Nicole Gonzalez, Jenée Nicole Jernigan, John Leitmeyer, Laura Palm, Malina Rosales, Ryan Smith, Amy Stoshak, and Donel Rickie William.
This exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.

iconomaniacs
Art History professors John Machado and Denise Johnson launched a visual art and culture podcast on March 27. You can listen to iconomaniacs at www.iconomaniacs.com.
Iconomaniacs: a podcast for the love of art. Join two intrepid art historians as they do what they do best - gab about visual art and culture in an irreverent, but insightful and (hopefully) interesting banter in about an hour.

Chaffey Visits the Getty Villa in Malibu
John Machado, Art History Professor and ASCC Faculty Advisor, and Susan Stewart, Director of Student Activities, joined just over 40 students on a bus trip to the Getty Villa in Malibu on Saturday, March 28. The trip was sponsored by the Associated Students of Chaffey College (ASCC) and funded by the College Service Fee.
The Getty Villa in Malibu is dedicated to the study of the arts and cultures of ancient Greece, Rome, and Etruria. Bordered by coastal mountains and the Pacific Ocean, the Getty Villa evokes the classical world in its architecture, landscape, and gardens, which have been planted with species known to have flourished in the ancient Mediterranean. The Getty Villa is modeled after a first-century Roman country house, the Villa dei Papiri in Herculaneum, Italy.

Christina Havenhill, Theatre Arts Professor
Led 14 students on a Theatre excursion to New York City January 4-11, 2009. It was a huge success allowing the students to see six Broadway productions and participate in voice and body workshops. They were able to tour the stage of the new musical Shrek and have a talk back with the production manager of Pal Joey. The students learned to ride the subways and buses in NYC and were successful with all hotel and travel arrangements. Yes, this was a theatre experience, but Christina strongly believes it was more of a life experience for all that attended.
Stan Hunter, Art/Ceramics Professor
His work will appear at the following shows:

Artists include: Jon Bonser, Elaine Bradford, Orly Cogan, Maggy Rozycki Hiltner, Carolyn Hopkins, KnittaPlease, Garth Johnson, Claire Joyce, KnittaPlease, Kate Kretz, Heather Nameth-Bren, Karen Reimer, Ben Schachter, DeAnna Skedel, and Laura Splan.
