The Dance: The History of American Minstrelsy

THE DANCE: THE HISTORY OF AMERICAN MINSTRELSY performance and lecture at Chaffey College

Rancho Cucamonga, CA - Chaffey College and the Wignall Museum are pleased to present The Dance: The History of American Minstrelsy, a free performance featuring Aaron White and Jason Christophe White of In Tha Cut Productions (
www.seethedance.com). This special performance is presented in conjunction with the concurrent exhibitions at the Wignall Museum, Mammygraphs, featuring work by Los Angeles-based artist Mark Steven Greenfield and Trick Baby with Minneapolis-based artist Ernest Arthur Bryant III.

The Dance condenses 100-years of minstrelsy history and explorations of the lingering perceptions that exist today into a one-hour performance which won the 2007 NAACP award for “Best Playwright” and has the support of Mark Steven Greenfield, Harry Belefonte, KCET and others.

The Dance will be performed on Monday, September 15, 7:00 – 9:00 p.m., in the Chaffey College Theatre. This performance is free and open to the public, although seating is limited.

Aaron White and Jason Christophe White will also present a lecture that same day, Monday, September 15, 12:30-2:00 p.m. This 1 hour lecture on Erasing the FEAR of American Minstrelsy will use actual photos, footage and sound bites from real historical performances to explore the history and legacy of American minstrelsy. This lecture will provide a platform for dialogue about critical issues surrounding race and is a perfect preparation for the performance of The Dance, giving visitors the opportunity to confront this atrocity in our American history together.

These events have been graciously supported by Chaffey College’s AMAN/AWOMAN, BFSA, Human Resources, Language Arts, the President’s Office and VPCA.

The Wignall Museum is an important part of the educational programs and mission of Chaffey College. Some artworks in the exhibitions on display are of a mature nature. Parents are strongly encouraged to view the show prior to sharing with children.

LOCATION: Chaffey College Theater and Wignall Museum at Chaffey College, 5885 Haven Avenue, Rancho Cucamonga, CA 91737-3002. Admission is free. Park in the North Parking Lot, permits can be purchased at vending machines for $2. Parking is free during museum receptions and special events.

After all of the discussions in regard to the work of Mark Steven Greenfield currently on view at the Wignall, I am greatly anticipating this performance with Aaron White and Jason Christophe White.

I thought this performance was absolutely moving!! The audience gave a hearty, and much deserved standing ovation to Aaron and Christophe. I wish the playwright/ performers much success in bringing The Dance to other communities and venues in the upcoming months (it's a must see in regards to the upcoming election) and the years to come. Big BRAVO!!!
